Sin and repentance

October 29, 2008

When our “repentance” functions in isolation rather than in community, it almost always indicates that we remain more concerned about personal appearances than the resolution of sin. We don’t want people to think we are ungodly – to think less of us. The fact that our sin remains hidden from others proves we still favor presenting a nicely packaged life to others, while keeping sin quasi-managed and submerged. Yet, genuine repentance desires to resolve anything and everything about our sin. No cover, no posturing, just pure repentance. God built that desire into the gift. (TrueFaced by Bill Thrall, Burce McNicol, and John Lynch)

How do you view sin and repentance? When you repent of sin does it happen in isolation, or does your sin and/or repentance get revealed to anyone. If we are serious about moving away from sin and pursuing purity shouldn’t there be a willingness to let our sin and especially the movement away from sin be seen by others (I am not saying we need to make it publically known to everyone)?

How serious are you about pursuing holiness and moving away from sin in your life? Are you serious enough to take risks to let your sin, brokenness, and repentance be known?

Walking in the Spirit

October 16, 2008

I have been asking a lot of questions lately about how to walk as a Christian. Some people have knowledge about Christianity and can give all the right answers. Some people have a conviction and faith, seeking to have a personal belief in Christ. Having the knowledge and a belief doesn’t mean we know how to live as a Christian.

“If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit” Galatians 5:25 ESV

It doesn’t matter how long we have held the knowledge and beliefs if we are not living by the Spirit. Living by the spirit should result in our lives being poured out, and our walk growing in depth and maturing. Sometimes we need to take a step back to look at how we are living, and if we are walking.

Are you living a life that is embracing God’s truth, seeking his ways, and aiming to mature and grow? How are you living to make those things happen? Are the choices and efforts you are taking based on your ideas or the truths God puts in his word? Today, I choose to seek God a little more than I did yesterday, and open myself up a little more to His ways and His people. I can’t always take big steps forward, but whether an inch or a mile we should be seeking to take one more step forward to walk in the spirit.
