Lasting change

March 22, 2007

The idea of change is scattered all over our culture. Some people try to avoid it while others embrace it and celebrate it. I am sure all of us could think of something we should change in our lives. Some things might be tangible items such as replacing a warn or broken belonging, loosing weight, or getting a new job. Other things might be internal items such as beliefs, values, character issues, or attitudes.

Our character, according to psychologists, is formed in the first few years of our lives. This doesn’t mean we can’t change after that time, but it will take time and work. When you attempt to change something do you use the right tool? If you are really desiring to change your character or transform your life you need to make the changes at your core, you need to change your heart. Often we try in our own power to change our behavior by concentrating on our human abilities, but the only way to find deep and lasting change is to change the heart. We can’t do achieve that change on our own. Changes to our heart can only happen with the help of God.

  • Keep vigilant watch over your heart; that’s where life starts. Proverbs 4:23
  • Show me your ways, O LORD, teach me your paths; guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long. Psalm 25:4-5
  • Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Psalm 51:10

Do you need to make a change? Are you willing to let God help you?
