Truth or a belief to be neutralized?

November 20, 2007

I have asked this question before, but I keep coming back to it. How do we know truth? How do we know that what we think, believe, see, feel, think, etc. is right? Every day people are in conflict with others because both sides are convinced they are right. This affects our view of God and our understanding of how to have relationship with him tremendously.

“And don’t kid yourself! Within us all are poisonous beliefs that need to be neutralized. Our faith cannot help being soiled in a drug-filled, self-obsessed world such as ours. We may never turn our backs on God, join a cult, or handle a snake. But we are all victims of poisonous ideas that distort the image of God and negate our faith. Though we tell ourselves we would certainly be able to escape the most toxic levels of faith, we would do well to remember that the headlines often describe people “just like us” who thought they were in touch with reality – but who ended up with a compulsive addiction to a false and hurtful religion.” (Toxic Faith by Stephen Arterburn and Jack Felton)

What is your view of God built upon? It is a structurally sound view? What would happen to your beliefs if a few holes were punched into them? Are your views of God built upon a foundation that is strong enough to withstand being rocked? Broken? Crumbled? What is it that could cause your beliefs to be shaken? What beliefs do you hold that need to be neutralized, and what are you doing about them?
