Curve Balls

June 16, 2010

Have ever started your day with plans only to have a phone call, circumstance, or situation send you flying in a different direction?

  • someone is in an accident
  • a medical diagnosis comes back with very bad news
  • you lose a job
  • your spouse leaves
  • a friend or child commits suicide
  • a home or business burns down
  • the stock market crashes and you lose your life savings
  • God let things happen in your life and now you are not sure you can trust or believe again

The last few years I have spent a lot of time reading and listening to people’s stories. Some of the stories include despair and questions where people have hit rock bottom. Pain that is more intense that what most of us could even imagine.

What do you do when your plans fail?

What do you do when life throws you a curve ball?

Does your faith work when you hit the wall or reach the end of your rope?

Are there words to say to someone who is experiencing hell on earth?

Is there hope? Is there light in the darkness?

Can anyone recover, heal, and find joy again after our plans fail? After our faith fails?

Is God really there when bad things happen to good people?

That is the theme of the book Plan B by Pete Wilson. What do you do with a shattered dream? Or an unmet expectation? What do you do when your life isn’t turning out the way you thought it would?

Our misplaced beliefs and mixed up expectations can lead to disillusionment, cynicism, and hopelessness. There is a way out. Even in the darkest moments, God is there. We may not feel it. We may not believe it. That can change.

My story is a journey out of disillusionment and despair. My faith didn’t work when I hit the wall and life took me rock bottom. I asked questions that wrecked me, but God was there. This week I celebrate a year of transformation and hope. What a journey it has been, and I think it has just begun.
